Plan a Mauritius holiday around the festivals of 2027

A festival can give a Mauritius holiday a memorable centre, provided the rest of the journey has room around it. Choose one celebration you want to understand, keep travel days simple and leave space for the island beyond the event. Andeor can help shape that balance through its partners, with the festival calendar as a starting point for a personal itinerary.

The public-holiday dates below follow the Cabinet announcement of 28 August 2026, checked on 31 October 2026. Eid-ul-Fitr remains subject to moon sighting. Holi is an indicative planning date. A public holiday does not confirm a performance, procession route, visiting time or invitation.

The 2027 calendar

1–2 January. New Year. Official public holidays. Keep arrival-day meals and onward transport arranged in advance.

22 January. Thaipoosam Cavadee. Official public holiday. Choose a local observance and follow the temple community’s instructions.

1 February. Commemoration of the abolition of slavery. Official public holiday. Give the day a reflective focus and verify access to any ceremony.

6 February. Chinese Spring Festival. Official public holiday. The holiday date does not fix the Chinatown performance programme.

6 March. Maha Shivaratree. Official public holiday. Pilgrimage activity also takes place before the festival day.

Around 10 March. Eid-ul-Fitr. Subject to moon sighting. Keep a little flexibility until the local date is confirmed.

12 March. Independence and Republic Day. Official public holiday. Confirm the location and access rules for the annual official programme.

Around 22 March. Holi. Indicative date; not a public holiday. A local community or organiser must confirm the date and visitor access.

7 April. Ougadi. Official public holiday. A family and religious occasion; public programmes are separate.

1 May. Labour Day. Official public holiday. Check the opening times of individual shops and attractions.

5 September. Ganesh Chaturthi. Official public holiday. The religious celebration falls on Sunday.

6 September. Following-day holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi. Official public holiday. Monday is an additional holiday, not a second confirmed festival programme.

Around 8–9 September. Père Laval pilgrimage. Annual observance; 2027 programme unconfirmed. The annual tradition centres on Sainte-Croix. Recheck the diocesan notice.

29 October. Divali. Official public holiday. Leave room for the evening and arrange your return journey.

1 November. All Saints’ Day. Official public holiday. Respect quiet family observance and cemetery visits.

2 November. Arrival of Indentured Labourers. Official public holiday. A day of remembrance. Confirm Aapravasi Ghat visitor arrangements.

Dates not announced. Festival Internasional Kreol. 2027 programme unconfirmed. Do not book flights around a presumed month or a previous edition’s dates.

25 December. Christmas. Official public holiday. Confirm festive meals, services and any hotel-specific booking conditions.

Choose the occasion before choosing the itinerary

Start with what draws you to the celebration. If it is food and city life, Chinese Spring Festival can anchor a Port Louis stay once its public programme is known. If it is the atmosphere of an evening, Divali suggests a relaxed day and time after dark. If it is religious tradition, Cavadee or Maha Shivaratree calls for careful local context and a willingness to observe quietly.

Tell Andeor whether attending is the main purpose of your trip or an optional part of a wider holiday. That distinction affects how much flexibility the itinerary needs. A festival-led journey should avoid placing international travel on the essential day. A wider holiday can keep the celebration as a possibility while retaining a complete itinerary if the programme changes.

A city and coast stay around 6 February

For a trip centred on Chinese Spring Festival, separate arrival, cultural discovery and relaxation. Settle into your accommodation first. Use another day for Port Louis streets, food and heritage, adapting the route to the confirmed festival programme. Then give the coast a day of its own rather than making the city visit the opening act for a hurried island crossing.

This is an itinerary framework, not a confirmed package. Andeor can organise a guided cultural visit through its partner where a suitable offer is available. Public performances, private invitations, meals and transport need their own confirmation. If the public festival programme falls on another date, the city day can move without undoing the entire stay.

Keep March flexible around pilgrimage and holidays

March contains Maha Shivaratree on 6 March, Eid provisionally around 10 March, Independence and Republic Day on 12 March and an indicative Holi date around 22 March. A busy calendar does not mean that one short trip should try to include everything. Pick the occasion that matters and let the others inform practical arrangements.

For a nature-focused holiday, avoid placing an essential drive through pilgrimage activity. A quieter visit to Grand Bassin on another day may suit you better. For a culture-focused holiday, allow time to understand the observance and keep a separate day for the coast or countryside. Where Eid affects a particular meal or service, leave that booking adjustable until the date is confirmed.

An evening-led stay around Divali

Divali on Friday 29 October can become the centre of an unhurried stay. Arrive with time to settle in, leave the festival day light and keep the evening available. Plan the following days around your interests, with individual opening times checked for the weekend and the public holidays on 1 and 2 November.

A heritage visit on another day gives the commemorations their own context rather than treating the whole period as one celebration. Choose a base that reduces the driving required by your actual plans. The best location depends on the local arrangement you have confirmed, not on a promise that one coast has a guaranteed festival spectacle.

What to include in your planning request

Share your travel dates, number of travellers, preferred pace, accommodation area and the occasion you hope to experience. Mention children, mobility needs and whether you prefer a short observation, an arranged cultural introduction or a public event. Add any fixed flights or meals so the day can be built around the commitments that cannot move.

Andeor can help coordinate the wider journey through its partners and arrange transfers through Seke, subject to the actual route and booking confirmation. A transfer is not automatically included in an activity or hotel booking. Religious access, a private invitation and an organiser’s programme remain decisions for the relevant community or venue.

Use the calendar and festival notes below to decide what belongs in your trip. Dates establish a useful framework. The final itinerary needs confirmed arrangements, enough time between them and an appealing alternative when a programme remains uncertain.

January begins with New Year and Cavadee

Both 1 and 2 January are public holidays. New Year is a good example of why a cultural calendar needs a practical companion. A hotel celebration, a family meal and a public beach gathering are different arrangements; none tells you whether the shop, museum or restaurant you want will open.

If you arrive during these days, decide where you will eat, how you will reach your accommodation and what can wait until later. Keep the first full day close to your base. Book any particular festive dinner against its actual menu and terms, and leave the next morning free of a tight departure. Travelling with children or preferring a quieter evening is a useful reason to ask about the setting before choosing it.

Thaipoosam Cavadee on 22 January

Thaipoosam Cavadee honours Muruga within the Tamil Hindu tradition. Decorated cavadees and offerings of milk are carried towards temples. The preparation and devotion matter as much as the procession a visitor sees. It is an act of worship, so an interesting photograph should never become the reason to interrupt it.

Choose one locality rather than chasing several processions. Ask the temple community where visitors may stand, how to dress and whether photography is welcome. Stay clear of the walking route and temple entrances. If particular rites make you uncomfortable, step back quietly. You do not need to move close to understand the occasion.

Build the day around a confirmed local arrangement. The national holiday establishes the date, not a single island-wide starting time. Leave your vehicle where directed, agree a pickup point away from the procession and keep the following activity optional. A calm meal and time to reflect can be a better second half of the day than another long drive.

1 February is a day of remembrance

The commemoration of the abolition of slavery deserves its own tone. Le Morne is a cultural landscape associated with the history of maroons and resistance to enslavement. Understanding that history changes a visit to the peninsula; the mountain is more than a backdrop to the lagoon.

Use the occasion to learn, listen and make room for reflection. If a ceremony is announced, check whether the public may attend and follow its guidance. A quieter visit to a heritage site on another day can also be meaningful. Do not assume that a holiday ceremony includes a guided mountain visit, or that a hike and a commemoration are interchangeable experiences.

Chinese Spring Festival on 6 February

Chinese Spring Festival brings family traditions, red decorations and festive food into the cultural year. Port Louis Chinatown provides a natural setting for learning about Sino-Mauritian life. Lion dances and other public performances may form part of an announced programme, but the holiday date alone does not promise a show.

Plan a compact city day. Explore the streets at a comfortable pace, leave time for food and choose any performance only once its organiser has confirmed the place and time. A place of worship should be visited according to its own access rules. A public street celebration and entry to a prayer space require different kinds of attention.

Keep the Central Market and the waterfront as possible additions, with opening times checked separately. Do not make a long list of stops essential to the day. If a performance is announced for a different weekend, decide whether the programme or the holiday itself is the experience you want before fixing your dates.

Maha Shivaratree on 6 March

Maha Shivaratree is dedicated to Shiva. On Mauritius, the pilgrimage to Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, gives the festival its distinctive geography. Pilgrims travel to the sacred lake, including in the days leading up to the holiday. The journey is part of the observance, not simply a way of arriving at an attraction.

Decide whether your purpose is to witness the pilgrimage respectfully or to visit the lake in a quieter setting. Those are two different days to plan. For a festival visit, use current local guidance on routes, access and appropriate behaviour. For an ordinary sightseeing visit, choosing another date gives the temple complex and lake their own space.

Keep a flexible route through the central and south-western parts of the island. Check the traffic arrangements close to travel, and do not rely on an ordinary mapping estimate during a procession. Avoid attaching an airport transfer, a timed boat departure or another essential appointment to a journey through pilgrimage activity. An agreed pickup point and a simple return plan matter more than completing every stop.

Eid-ul-Fitr remains subject to moon sighting

The Cabinet calendar lists 10 March for Eid-ul-Fitr with an explicit qualification: the exact day depends on the visibility of the moon. Eid marks the end of Ramadan. Preserve that uncertainty when booking around it; a date printed in a holiday table is not the final local confirmation.

For travellers, this is an opportunity to appreciate a different rhythm of family, prayer and hospitality, without assuming that private celebrations are open events. Accept an invitation on the host’s terms and ask before taking photographs. A mosque visit requires its own permission and appropriate clothing; arriving at a busy prayer time is not a substitute for an arranged cultural visit.

If your itinerary depends on a particular shop, restaurant or service, contact it directly for the relevant day. Keep one part of your schedule movable until the date is confirmed. That small amount of flexibility is more useful than treating the whole island as either fully open or fully closed.

Independence and Republic Day on 12 March

12 March marks both Independence and Republic Day. It is a national holiday with a different purpose from the religious festivals around it. Flags, civic events and the official programme can provide a window into contemporary Mauritian identity, alongside the island’s older histories.

Use a current announcement to choose any public event. Venue, timing, crowd arrangements and admission are programme details, not permanent facts attached to the date. Build a city visit around one confirmed event and leave room for the journey out. If you prefer a quieter day, make a heritage visit at another time and use the holiday for a simple day near your accommodation.

Holi is a separate date to confirm

Holi is associated with colour, spring and Hindu community celebrations. Around 22 March is an indicative 2027 planning date, drawn from a local festival calendar that itself says dates need confirmation. Holi is not listed as a public holiday in the Cabinet’s 2027 calendar.

Before joining a gathering, establish whether it is a community celebration, an invitation or a ticketed commercial event. Each has its own arrangements. Ask whether visitors may take part and whether colour throwing is part of that particular gathering. Permission to watch does not automatically mean permission to put colour on someone.

Wear clothes you are happy to stain if you are joining in, protect cameras and phones, and agree a meeting place with your group. Anyone who would rather observe should be able to do so without being drawn into the activity. Do not plan a flight or hotel change solely around an unconfirmed Holi event.

Ougadi on 7 April and the quieter middle months

Ougadi, also written Ugadi, is the Telugu New Year. Its 2027 public holiday falls on 7 April. Religious observance and family gatherings are central to its meaning; a traveller should not expect every significant festival to produce a public street programme.

April also offers a useful reminder that Easter services, temple calendars and community observances do not all appear as national holidays. Check the relevant place of worship or organiser for a particular service or event. This guide uses the public-holiday list as a foundation, not as a complete inventory of the spiritual life of the island.

May to August can still be rewarding for cultural travel. Choose a museum visit, a food walk, a historic neighbourhood or an announced music event for its own content. There is no need to manufacture a festival around your travel dates. For Labour Day on 1 May, verify the opening hours of individual places; it is a public holiday, not a promise of a visitor programme.

Ganesh Chaturthi on 5 September, with a holiday on 6 September

The official calendar makes an important distinction. Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Sunday 5 September. Monday 6 September is also a public holiday under the following-day provision stated in the announcement. This does not move the religious festival to Monday, nor establish two days of visitor events.

Ganesh Chaturthi honours Ganesha. Worship and processions may culminate in the immersion of an image in water. The timing and place belong to the local community’s observance. Verify them locally rather than assuming that a particular beach will host a procession at sunset.

If you are invited to watch, stand where directed and leave clear space for participants and offerings. Do not enter the water or follow a group onto restricted ground for a photograph. Plan an ordinary coastal day around the confirmed local arrangement, with an easy way to leave if the area becomes crowded. Check Monday’s opening hours separately from Sunday’s religious programme.

Père Laval and Sainte-Croix in September

The annual Père Laval pilgrimage is associated with Sainte-Croix, on the outskirts of Port Louis, around 8 and 9 September. The Diocese’s 2026 programme provides evidence of the tradition and its location, but its service times, access rules and transport arrangements must not be reused as the 2027 programme.

Treat the 2027 details as unconfirmed until the Diocese publishes them. This is a pilgrimage and place of prayer, not an overnight entertainment itinerary. Dress respectfully, allow people space and ask before taking photographs. A visit outside the busiest observance can be a better choice for travellers seeking a quieter introduction.

If you plan to attend, confirm the walking route, a practical meeting place and your return transport. Avoid promising a precise journey time through the surrounding streets. The pilgrimage is not listed as a national public holiday in the Cabinet calendar, so distinguish the local movement of people from nationwide holiday closures.

Divali lights the evening of 29 October

Divali, also written Diwali or Deepavali, falls on Friday 29 October in Mauritius in 2027. Lamps, decorative lighting and the sharing of sweets give the celebration its familiar atmosphere. The National Heritage Fund records it as the festival of lights, with traditions rooted in community and home life.

Give the evening space in your itinerary. Spend the day at a comfortable pace and arrange transport before setting out. If you walk through a decorated neighbourhood, use public space thoughtfully and avoid blocking entrances or the road. A lit home remains a private home. Ask before photographing its occupants or approaching the entrance.

An invitation to share sweets is an act of hospitality, not an attraction included in a travel package. Accept or decline courteously and ask about ingredients if you need to. Families who prefer a quieter evening can choose a shorter outing and an earlier return. No neighbourhood, display or fireworks programme is guaranteed by the festival date.

The next public holidays are All Saints’ Day on Monday 1 November and Arrival of Indentured Labourers on Tuesday 2 November. Together with the weekend, these dates make a useful five-day planning window. That is a calendar observation, not a claim that every business closes for five days or that every hotel is full.

All Saints’ Day on 1 November

All Saints’ Day is the alternate Christian public holiday included in the official 2027 list. Keep the distinction between this date and the religious observance of Assumption on 15 August, which is not listed as a national holiday for 2027.

Family remembrance and cemetery visits call for discretion. A cemetery is not an opportunity for close photographs of mourners. If you are visiting a church or attending a service, confirm its arrangements directly. Otherwise, plan an ordinary holiday day and check each opening time on its own merits.

Remembering indentured labour on 2 November

The Arrival of Indentured Labourers is commemorated on 2 November. Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis helps place this history within the wider story of migration, labour and the making of Mauritius. The UNESCO site is associated with the immigration depot through which indentured labourers passed.

Approach a visit as an opportunity to understand lives and histories, with time to read and reflect. Check the site’s visitor arrangements and any announced commemorative programme separately. A ceremony can change how a place is accessed; neither the holiday nor this guide establishes its 2027 opening hours.

For a fuller cultural day, choose another nearby part of Port Louis after the heritage visit, rather than treating the site as a short stop between attractions. Keep the histories of slavery and indenture distinct. They are connected to the island’s development, but they are not interchangeable terms or experiences.

Creole culture extends beyond a festival programme

Festival Internasional Kreol and related Creole cultural programming have celebrated music, language and cultural expression in past editions. No verified 2027 dates or programme are established by the sources used for this guide. Do not carry over the month, venue, performers or ticket arrangements from another year.

Keep an eye on the tourism authorities and organisers for a dated announcement. If a programme is released, select the event that interests you and check its actual location and access conditions. A concert, a food event and a cultural discussion need different kinds of planning.

You can also make space for Mauritian music outside a festival. Traditional sega has its own history, instruments, song and dance, described in the national heritage inventory. Seek a setting that explains the tradition and lets you listen as well as watch. A hotel show may be enjoyable, but it should not be presented as the complete expression of Creole culture.

Christmas on 25 December

Christmas combines Christian observance with family time and festive gatherings. The public holiday in 2027 falls on Saturday 25 December. A church service, a restaurant lunch and a resort programme are separate experiences with their own arrangements.

Choose the atmosphere that suits your group. If a particular meal or service is important, confirm it before travel. When comparing hotels, read the specific festive terms, including whether any meal, minimum stay or additional charge actually applies to your chosen booking. Do not assume that another property follows the same policy.

Keep transport and the following morning straightforward. A relaxed day close to your accommodation is a perfectly good alternative to a full programme. If your holiday continues into New Year, review those arrangements separately rather than assuming one festive booking covers both occasions.

How to be a considerate guest

Begin by asking what is open to visitors. A public holiday, a public road and a place of worship are not the same form of access. Follow the community’s guidance on clothing, footwear, seating and photography. Where instructions are unclear, pause and ask rather than copying another visitor.

Give people control over whether they are photographed. Ask before close portraits, religious rites or images involving children. Do not move offerings, enter a procession or ask worshippers to repeat a gesture for a camera. Keep phones quiet where appropriate and avoid introducing a drone into a religious or crowded setting.

If you are invited to take part, find out what participation means before agreeing. Watching respectfully is also a valid choice. Keep meals, alcohol and smoking away from places where they are inappropriate, and leave the surroundings as you found them. Cultural curiosity works best when it leaves room for the people whose occasion it is.

Plan the journey as carefully as the occasion

Choose one main event for the day. Confirm its location, timing and visitor access, then build outward from that point. Check transport in both directions, including where a driver can actually stop if the usual street is unavailable. Keep the contact details and meeting point accessible without depending on a live map.

For a family visit, choose a short first outing, an obvious meeting point and an easy route back. Bring what you need for an ordinary day out, allow breaks and make it possible for someone to leave early. For mobility requirements, confirm walking distance, surfaces, seating and access to toilets with the actual venue; a national festival listing cannot establish these details.

Confirm opening hours individually. Some businesses work through a holiday while others close or change their schedule. Reserve an essential meal and avoid attaching an unchangeable booking to an uncertain procession finish. Leave a quiet alternative in your plan, such as a nearby coastal walk or a later heritage visit, that does not depend on the event going ahead.
