What you'll do
Step into the heart of Mauritius and uncover the hidden wonders of the Black River Gorges National Park, a 67.54 km² expanse of untouched wilderness. Known as the "lungs of Mauritius," this world-unique eco-system is home to numerous varieties of species such as the Echo-Parakeet, the Mauritian Kestrel or the Pink Pigeon. During this hike we will discover different viewpoints from which we can contemplate different parts of the park and its surroundings…
Arrival
Meet your guide at the designated meeting point for a warm welcome. Once all participants have arrived, follow your guide in your respective vehicles to the starting point of the hike, located approximately 4.3 km further along at the Black River Gorges National Park parking area. Before setting off, your guide will provide a safety briefing, explain the route, and answer any questions.
Ascent & Viewpoints
Begin a steady ascent through the native forest of Black River Gorges National Park. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the area's unique flora and fauna before reaching the first viewpoint, Mare aux Joncs, also known as Bats Valley, where thousands of Mauritian fruit bats can often be seen soaring above the canopy. Take a short break to hydrate, enjoy the scenery, and capture some memorable photos.
Highest Point
Continue climbing to Plateau Remousse, one of the park's most spectacular viewpoints, offering panoramic views over the surrounding mountains and forests. Enjoy another short break to rest, take photos, and appreciate the peaceful surroundings.
Descent to the river
Begin your descent towards the river, enjoying a different perspective of the national park along the way. As you make your way down, take in the peaceful surroundings before reaching the river.
Step 5
End your adventure with the opportunity to cool off in the river with an optional swim before making the short walk back to the parking area.
Departure
Return to the meeting point for a short debrief before saying goodbye.
